Synonymous with the cowboy of American legend, the western saddle is the type traditionally used by the cattle rancher who worked long hours while mounted. It is derived from the saddle used by the Spanish vaqueros, who were early horse trainers and cattle ranchers. The English saddle stands in direct contrast. Although not limited to England, this saddle type is used in the English riding style which is found in most Olympic and equestrian competitions. This saddle is lighter than its western counterpart, with no horn and stirrups that will give way in case the rider falls. It was traditionally used for fox hunting, thus it is designed to allow the horse maximum movement and the freedom to jump and run across rugged terrain.
