A lot of Spanish artists have become known and left such great paintings, especially during the time of El Siglo de Oro, or Spain’s Golden Age; most of Spain’s most excellent painters emerged during that time. However, one painter that became most known of them all is Diego Velasquez; he is regarded as one of the most influential and most admired artist in his own time. He was friends with King Philip IV and his chief minister as his masterpieces were immensely adored by everyone and in every artwork he made, Velasquez showcased his skill and style.
Diego Velasquez was brought to life in June 5, 1599 in Seville and he is the first born of six children and came from a family of less nobility. Velasquez’s skill was so apparent that at the young age of eleven, he began his apprenticeship with another master of the arts at that time whose name was Francisco Pacheco. He supported himself by doing a number of paintings and got married to Pacheco’s daughter; at that time most of his themes were religious and tavern pieces, and because he truly is a gifted painter he was able to sell his paintings and earned enough money to buy a comfortable house for them and another house to be rent out.
Diego Velasquez produced plenty of exceptional paintings that made him popular and an example of the country’s most influential personalities. Among his famous paintings is Surrender of Breda which he painted when he met Marques de Spinola; the painting signifies the victory of Spinola and it was said that Spinola was dazed and in awe when he saw the painting and cannot believe how brilliant Velasquez’ ability is to express emotion through realism in his portraits. However, Diego Velasquez would create another masterpiece that is acknowledged the greatest piece he has created which is Las Meninas or TheMaids in Honour; it is the most viewed painting in the world and even most people that are not familiar with Spanish painters knew his name because of Las Meninas.
A lot more can be told about Diego Velasquez, his life, paintings and character; he truly is Spain’s most admired artist and one of Spain’s pride.
