Labor Day traditionally marks the end of summer in the US but the warmth and the long days still make for some seriously fun outdoor time. In honor of the upcoming Labor Day holiday, we collected some of the top outdoor activities so you can make this Labor Day not only fun but memorable.
Head to the Park – This one is easy and kids love it. The US has 58 protected areas called National Parks that are operated by the National Park Service. Each state has state parks which are typically managed by individual states and you can find city parks within most cities within the US. The point we are making is that parks whether they be National Parks or small city parks are everywhere and easily accessible to just about anyone. They make excellent picnicking venues and there's almost always tons of kids activities and a schedule of events most of which are free, making for a very budget friendly outdoor activity that can be shared with friends and family. Check with your local chamber of commerce or city Parks and Rec Department for a listing of what's happening and what facilities are available.
Camping Out – Most everyone loves the idea of sleeping under the stars at night, making smores and sitting around the campfire enjoying nature. Camping is one of the most economical ways to spend a weekend away from home. Many State Parks and National Parks offer designated camping areas for tent campers and sometimes RV campers. Since these areas are preserved, it's a great way to get a glimpse of wildlife – raccoons, deer, wild turkeys. Be sure to check the weather forecast ahead of time if tent camping.
Take a Road Trip – Jump in the car and just go. You might want to have a general destination in mind but being spontaneous and just packing a bag and a picnic basket with snacks for along the way can lead you into some fun and adventurous areas. Traveling up or down the coast line is a gorgeous way to get out and really see a new area and discover new places to shop and dine. Opting for a stay at a B&B might be an option here where you get all the amenities of being in a hotel but still enjoy the feeling of being at home. Most proprietors know a lot about the area and can offer first-hand experience on where to go and what to do.
Find a Watering Hole – Whether it be a swimming pool or hiking to some waterfalls, Labor Day is the perfect time to get a final dose of wet summer fun. Since it's usually still hot this time of year, the Labor Day weekend is a great time to head on a white water rafting trip or if a slow moving, meandering river is more your style, opt for tubing. It's something you can do with family and friends and it's a great way to enjoy the outdoors in a way you normally don't experience.
Labor Day Party Picnic – Invite a few friends over, fire up the grill, get your picnic gear out, grab some fireworks and you are pretty much set. Some of the best memories are made with friends and family just doing the simple things like sharing time together. Labor Day is the perfect time to grab some burgers and dogs and let the kids run through the sprinkler. Fireworks, though, are always a great addition. The kids and grownups alike love bottle rockets and sparklers. Make the party an evening gathering and you can light the fire pit and offer up smores for dessert. Throw out few picnic blankets or set a table under the stars. The idea is simply to make it fun.
