What is the difference between using watercolor pencils and watercolor paints sets?
Is one easier or better than the other for a beginner? I am leaning toward the pencils.
Answer:
Watercolor paints can be a difficult medium to master. Watercolor is unforgiving because the paint is transparent. This means that you can see whatever you painted over. If you make a mistake, you can't paint over it like in oils or acrylic.
However; not to discourage you, I enjoy painting watercolor. I love the way the paint looks ethereal. It flows and has life. To me acrylics and oils look dead. They sit on top of the canvas. That's not to say that there are no beautiful paintings in those mediums, but I digress.
Watercolor pencils have their place. You can try them, but with the understanding that they won't look like a true watercolor painting.
When you purchase your supplies, make sure you buy the best quality paints or pencils, paper and brushes you can afford. Cheaper art materials won't have the same results as quality materials and you won't be as happy with the results.
