Four Glazing Options To Consider For A Composite Front Door
It is tempting to believe that the best front door to choose is the plain, solid wood version that can cost so much. With upvc often failing to impress when it comes to the wow factor, the traditional heavyweights of the door world seems a safe option. However, a composite front door can impress just as much as the old reliable, though in more ways. The use of glass, and the character of a particular design it features, can leave a lasting impression.
Generally, when considering composite doors, uk home owners are won over by the fact that they can actually design their own door. They are not after all forced to search high and low for the closest manufactured version before finally settling for what does not quite match the vision. Even at the rear of the home, where bi folding doors can add so much aesthetically, glass options provide opportunities to create doors the home owner has always wanted. There are, however, a few aspects that one should consider carefully.
Glass Effects
It is rare that glass in a front door is crystal clear, with effects and designs utilised to both greet visitors warmly and maintain privacy. Amongst the effects are bevelled, frosted, coloured and leaded glass.
Bevelled glass refers to the slight sloping effect that occurs close to the frame, while frosted is exactly as it sounds. However, textured frosted glass has a kind of bubble effect, commonly used in shower doors and bathroom doors. It is also possible to apply frosted film to clear glass to complete the effect, with an array of designs etched into the film to provide distinction to any window.
Coloured glass is commonly used with leaded glass to create a church type effect in some homes, making elaborate and contemporary designs very possible. Leaded glass, meanwhile, also allows different effects, to be utilised side by side, such as frosted and and coloured. The lead can be applied in intricate designs, adding to the impact of the window.
Glass Designs
In truth, there is no real limit to the selection of designs that one can get for their front door. This is due to the ability to have windows custom made but, in general, manufacturers of composite models offer a limited range of very affordable designs. Diamond shapes are very popular, and these are usually available in bevelled cut. However, far more intricate designs include series of hoops, ovals and rectangles that can produce highly decorative and attractive designs.
Strength of Glass
It is also possible to choose between toughened glass or laminated glass for a door. Both are significantly stronger than the straight forward plate glass that can easily smash, but they have their own specific advantages too. Toughened glass is about 5 times thicker than plate glass and is therefore significantly harder to break. If it were to break, it would smash into small pieces making it safer to tidy up.
Laminated glass, meanwhile, is a little thicker than the toughened sheets of glass. It is constructed by placing a thin laminating sheet between two regular panes of glass. The result is a pane that is easily broken, but is impossible to shatter. It is commonly used in shop windows as a security feature to prevent looting, and in car windscreens to prevent injuries from flying glass in the event of an accident.
Double Glazing
It is an industry standard these days, but double glazing is something that one should double check on in any case. The advantages are already well known, with a double glazed window providing better thermal efficiency, in keeping warmth in and keeping the elements out. Usually, double glazing is about 1 inch in thickness, sealed snugly into the door, which makes for a good barrier from the cold outside.
It is possible to choose several accessories for a composite front door also, from the type of door handle to the addition of a knocker, some of which come with built in spyhole. Whether it is chrome, gold, brass or stainless steel, the options are there, though the specific range depends on the suppliers themselves.
When it comes to composite doors, uk home owners have certainly developed a taste for them, with even french and bi folding doors benefiting from the glazier effects available.
