Frequently Asked Questions...
Does anyone know where they sell a yoshi stuffed animal in the Bay area?
I'm looking for a black yoshi plush doll or stuffed animal that is in the Bay Area or preferably close in San Jose. Anyone know a place?
Answer:
It's been a few years since I've been in the area, but I remember that there are several stores in the Bay area that carry Japanese toys.
I strongly recommend KimonoMyHouse. I traveled across the country (twice!!!) to go to that store. The owner even gave my wife and I a gift when he deduced we were on our honeymoon.
They can be found on the web, but are physically in the bay area. The website has the address/directions & phone number.
Good Luck!

Russian Dolls History
Russian Nesting doll is most popular Russian national souvenir. It is a folk art which came into being at the end of 19th century which was a period of great economic development in Russia along with Russian culture mainly Russian Art.
Proficient artists worked along with folk craftsmen who preserved this artistic and traditional skill of making Russian nesting doll . The first Baushka was hand made in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin and designed by proficient artists who worked along with folk craftsmen. The first Russian nested doll set was carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin which was designed by Sergey Malyutin in an art workshop nearMoscow. This craft continued to be a regional folk art before it won a bronze medal at the World Exhibition inParis, thus giving it world wide recognition.
The art of renowned Matryoshkas was developed from an already developed folk art of creating Easter eggs nested one within another. The wood that was used was generally mostly lime wood. Other than lime, birch, alder and aspen woods are also used in the production of these dolls.
Matryoskha basically consists of a wooden figure which separates, top from bottom, to reveal a smaller figure of the same shape inside, which has, in turn, another figure inside of it, and so on..... Quite a lot of concentration was done while shaping and crafting the thinness of the dolls. The dolls were also known for the intricate painting and designs.
Russian doll derived its name matryoskha from the Latin word mater which meant mother in English. Russian family life was displayed out through the dolls, usually a peasant mother in traditional dress with a babushka scarf, and a portly figure and her many offspring. Here detailed attention was given to the facial expression of the dolls. While both male and female figures were portrayed, usually the smallest doll in the set of Russian Nesting Dolls was mostly a baby. Thus it articulated the oldest symbol of human culture.
The theme of matryoskha can be anything, ranging from fairy tale characters to animals nested dolls or popular figurines. All make a delightful combination as the charm of Russian doll is infectious.
